The 'Why' Behind the 'What'

I remember it like it was yesterday...

In December of 2008, while I was a senior in college, I was presented with a most fabulous opportunity.  My roommates/sorority sisters and I would be traveling to Hawaii with two of our friends/brothers from our brother fraternity.  One of them had grandparents who had a condo on Maui.  All we needed to do was buy our plane tickets and bring cash for meals.

we. were. stoked.

The trip was a blast and many, many, many memories were made.

However, one thing happened on that trip that is not such a fond memory.  In true, college student fashion, three out of five of us over-drafted on our bank accounts.

I look back now and think:  What business did I have going to HAWAII when I was that irresponsible with my money?!

Of course, I'm very glad I went and don't regret it for one minute.  However, I often look back at that time and think:  "Never again.  Never again do I want to experience that HORRIBLE feeling!"

Have I over-drafted on my bank account since that trip?  Yes.  Many, many times.  Will I over-draft again?  Well, my hope is no.  And here is why.

I've embarked on a journey.  On my twenty-seventh birthday, this past February I committed to breaking myself free of the bonds of debt that have entangled me for far too long.

Sound dramatic?  I say not dramatic enough.  Debt is one of the cruelest things that ever came upon us.  And I'm in a lot of it.

In future posts, I will outline exactly:  How much debt I am in, what kind of debt it is, what got me in that debt, and my plans to get out of it - and fast.

My hope through this blog is that my journey might inspire you.  And, hopefully, give you some tools to embark on the same journey I have!

To be "Debt-Free in Three" - becoming debt-free in a total of three years.

It can happen.

It will happen.

And it is going to be glorious.
